Chop one lemon (or an orange for dry hair). Place in a pot with 2 cups water. Boil until half of the initial amount remains. Cool, strain, and place in a spray bottle. Store in the refrigerator. If it is too sticky, add more water. Add one ounce rubbing alcohol as a preservative and then the spray can be stored for up to two weeks unrefrigerated.

Homemade Wipes

To make any of these wipes, tear off paper towels and lay in a square plastic container. They can be folded or cut in half. Mix ingredients in a large measuring cup, and slowly pour over a stack of paper towels. They will 'squish' down after absorbing the liquid. Seal tightly.

Caution: Some square seals are not airtight and may leak if tipped.

Almost all store-bought deodorants are laced with questionable ingredients and loaded with synthetic fragrances. Antiperspirants can also be bad because they actually block sweat glands—this may be asking for trouble since the underarm area is especially sensitive and is susceptible to irritation and rashes. Anyway, once an antiperspirant wears off, underarm sweat glands produce more perspiration to compensate.
There is an alternative. Sweat is odorless until it comes into contact with airborne bacteria. Antibacterial herbs such as chamomile and coriander inhibit growth of underarm bacteria and solve the problem naturally. If you do not perspire much, you may find that a simple aromatic body powder will do. Arrowroot, cornstarch or white clay are good bases for powder.

Natural Deodorant
2 ounces witch hazel (any drug store)
5 drops each sage and lavender essential oils

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well before every application.

Miracle Spray

I think this is quite an old recipe, it's been used in my family for a long time. I like it because there are no chemicals, it's inexpensive and it smells good! This can be used as an air freshener or as a personal freshener on a hot day. Try spraying your poor hot feet after a hot day of shopping. I use it to spray on my hands after dishes or housework, the vinegar is a natural skin softener.

1 cup distilled water
4 teaspoons baking soda
2 tablespoons white vinegar
3-5 drops peppermint oil


1. Mix vinegar and baking soda until foaming stops.
2. Add oil and then the water.
3. Refrigerate for best results.
